Chesterton Town Council supports reopening of Chellberg Farm

By VICKI URBANIK

Noting the historical and cultural significance of the Chellberg Farm, =20=

the Chesterton Town Council on Monday endorsed a resolution calling on =20=

the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to reopen the working farm.

The resolution was presented by Chesterton Town Council member Jim =20
Ton, who said he fears that the community has lost one of its greatest =20=

assets with the end of the historical farm.

=93For years, the farm has been an educational experience for students =20=

in the entire Duneland area,=94 states the resolution, which Ton read at =
=20
Monday=92s town council meeting. =93Where the community is concerned it =20=

has been a constant reminder of our heritage, a real piece of history =20=

come to life. To lose it means we have lost a portion of who we are.=94

Ton=92s resolution goes on to say that the community=92s roots are =20
agrarian, but that growth and change have affected people=92s =20
understanding of the farming experience.

=93Before there was a state park or steel mills, before there was a =20
Wizard or a water park, there was a Chellberg Farm,=94 Ton read.

=93Farming at Chellberg was a part of our roots. We can never fully =20
understand who we are collectively or individually until we understand =20=

where we have been,=94 he said.

The other town council members agreed by consensus to send a letter to =20=

National Lakeshore Superintendent Constantine Dillon to revise the =20
plan for the farm and reconsider the closing of the farming =20
operations. Those in agreement were council president Emerson DeLaney, =20=

Jeff Trout, and Sharon Darnell. Absent was Dave Cincoski.

The Chellberg Farm ceased its farming operations earlier this year, =20
after the farm animals were sold and the former farmer retired and was =20=

not replaced. The closure of the farm has sparked public outcry, but =20
Dillon has said that he envisions a broader cultural center onsite =20
that could include farming operations as well as interpretive programs =20=

on such topics as cultural diversity and Native American history.

Room Facelift

Town council members agreed with a suggestion from Darnell to upgrade =20=

the town council=92s meeting room. She proposed removing older items, =20=

adding new ones, changing the room=92s color to a more neutral tone, and =
=20
moving the main meeting table from the north end of the room to the =20
east.

DeLaney said with the council table moved, the audience could hear =20
council member discussion even when a train comes by

Stimulus Effort

The council agreed to participate in an effort by the Northwest =20
Indiana Forum to retain an Indianapolis law firm to identify ways to =20
maximize the possible benefits from the next round of federal economic =20=

stimulus funds.

Town Attorney Chuck Lukmann expressed a concern that the Forum might =20
come back and request more than the town=92s $2,600 contribution if not =20=

enough other communities sign on. Town council members agreed to join =20=

in the effort, contingent upon final review of the agreement by =20
Lukmann.=20=
