How you can help

CONTRIBUTIONS
The Heinze Fund is largely dependent on the contributions of interested parties like you. Each year we receive generous donations from individuals and organizations which make it possible for us to continue our work. If you would like to provide a monetary donation, send your check to our Michigan City address. All donations are tax-deductible.

Money is not the only donation that we gladly accept. Many people donate property to the Heinze Fund. Even if your land is not suitable for preservation, its resale value can help us fulfill our goals. We'd be happy to discuss the tax advantages of such donations.

Also, we are always looking for hand tools - shovels, garden rakes, shears, pruning saws, chain saws, and wheelbarrows. If you have extra tools (in good condition only) you'd like to donate, please call us. We also need a working two-way communication system (walkie-talkies) for use during prescribed fires. As with any non-cash donation, the fair market value of these items can be deducted on your taxes.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Stewardship activities - the restoration and maintenance of land under our protection - are a vital part of our operations. We periodically sponsor clean-up days at our properties that rely primarily on volunteers to remove exotic plant species, post signs, erect fences, and haul out trash. We are also looking for volunteers to undergo training to help us conduct prescribed fires. If you don't mind getting a little wet and dirty, we could use you as a stewardship volunteer. Call the office for information on planned workdays or to make other arrangements to suit your schedule.

If you have any other special skills and want to get involved, give us a call. Volunteers are currently providing vital computer, clerical, writing and editing services. You can help too!

PLANNED GIVING
A variety of planned giving options exist to transfer wealth from individuals to their favorite charity, now or in the future. These can be as simple as naming the charity in your will or making a gift of appreciated stock, a retirement account, or real property. More complex arrangements may involve life estates, pooled income funds, charitable trusts, and even life insurance. All these planned giving options let you control both the amount and timing of your donation, and most importantly, how your gift will be used.
