What is ecological landscaping and how can it help protect water quality?

April 13, 2009 • Bass Pro Shop, Seminar Room - Portage, IN


Save the Dunes and Tetra Tech, Inc. are sponsoring this two-part workshop that will provide audience members with an understanding of landscaping techniques that protect water quality. The morning session presentations are oriented toward homeowners, master gardeners, and garden clubs. The afternoon session will provide more technical information for these groups as well as park districts, landscape professionals, municipalities, property managers, and other interested groups. Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in both sessions. Space is limited and registration is mandatory. The $10 workshop fee must be paid online to register.

Principal Instructor: Dr. Jeff Schloss is an Extension Professor in Biological Sciences and a Cooperative Extension Water Quality Specialist at the University of New Hampshire. He is coauthor of the recent publication Landscaping at the Water’s Edge, an ecological approach.

Guest speaker: Robert Thompson serves as Executive Director for Porter County Plan Commission. His Masters of City and Regional Planning is from the Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture and Planning.

Guest speaker: Angela Sturdevant is a biologist with the Lake and River Enhancement Program in the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. She earned a BA in Biology from Smith College and an MS in Environmental Science from Indiana University.
