Save the Dunes Tracks and Sets Legislative Priorities

Posted: Thu, January 21, 2010
With the 2010 Indiana Legislative session underway, Save the Dunes has been busily reviewing House and Senate bills that have been introduced concerning environmental issues. We have also, once again, contracted with our lobbyist, Sarah Kempfer, to keep us, and you, informed about any and all important legislative action during the session.

On January 26 Save the Dunes will participate in Conservation Lobby Day, sponsored by the Indiana Conservation Alliance, to talk with our state representatives about pending legislation.

**Both the House and Senate have introduced Net Metering bills that we support (HB1094, SB97). The bills expand the ability of producers of wind and solar energy to sell their energy to large electricity distributers. Another good House bill (HB1190) requires the electric utilities to give energy distribution priority to energy created from renewable sources.

** The House and Senate have each introduced bills that support education and research about soil and septic systems and the promotion of recycling, respectively, that we support.

** We also support legislative efforts to ban phosphorous in fertilizers that cause algae blooms and encourage growth of e-coli colonies.

** Unfortunately, we have not seen a Renewable Energy bill that we can support. SB94 and HB1081 are not clear enough about promoting the types of renewable energy that are truly friendly to the environment.

** There are also a couple of bills (HB1201, SB282) that seek to allow counties to manage drainage issues in ways that are not well-thought out. Save the Dunes promotes comprehensive watershed management planning and low-impact development that manages storm water AND improves water quality.

There are many other bills that we are watching carefully before we decide to support or oppose them.

To learn more about the issues, come to a Pot Luck Luncheon and Legislative Update on March 13th, 2010 at noon at Barker House, 444 Barker Rd., Michigan City. Please RSVP at (219) 879-3937

Financial donations for all these efforts are greatly needed and appreciated. Please consider making a donation to support funding for our lobbyist as well education and outreach on these important legislative issues by clicking on our commerce page (http://www.savedunes.org/commerce/) and then scrolling down to the “Donations” section at the bottom. In the field “Address Line 2” be sure to place the words “Lobby Appeal” so that your donation will be credited to the correct program. A mailable form may also be downloaded below.
