Why Watershed Management?

A watershed is the area of land that drains to a creek, river, lake, or other body of water. Because watersheds are determined by land elevation rather than political borders, watershed boundaries can cross municipal, state, or even international boundaries. Watershed management is an effective way to cross traditional boundaries and bring people in a region together to make responsible land use choices that protect water quality.

Fostering Sustainable Development Study

SDCF partnered with local governmental agencies to estimate the impacts of new development on local water resources with and without incorporation of LID BMPs.  SDCF found that incorporation of riparian buffers and LID BMPs can greatly reduce the stormwater volume and pollutant load increases associated with new development in Northwest Indiana.  Download the Fostering Sustainable Development Project Summary for more information.
