Save the Dunes Watershed Program

Save the Dunes Conservation Fund (SDCF) began developing a watershed program in 2003. SDCF is currently funded by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to coordinate the development & implementation of watershed management plans in the Dunes Creek and Salt Creek watersheds. Both are located in Porter County, Indiana within the Lake Michigan Basin. The Dunes Creek Watershed Management Plan was completed and approved by IDEM in 2006, and SDCF is now putting the plan into action. Development of the Salt Creek Watershed Management Plan is currently underway.

Why Watershed Management?

A watershed is the area of land that drains to a creek, river, lake, or other body of water. Because watersheds are determined by land elevation rather than political borders, watershed boundaries can cross municipal, state, or even international boundaries. Watershed management is an effective way to cross traditional boundaries and bring people in a region together to make responsible land use choices that protect water quality.
