The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore issued its selected alternative on December 16, 2013 for its Porter Beach / Wabash Avenue plans. The good news is that it does not include an expanded parking circulation area, which might have impacted adjacent good-quality dune. Plans do include, however, coordination between the National Lakeshore and the Town of Porter to improve the sidewalk along Wabash Avenue for visitor safety and to improve accessibility – this is wonderful. Also included is a fix for a pesky foot-wash station. And the icing on the cake will be a restored dune north of the town parking lot. Thanks to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore for really listening to Save the Dunes and the many residents and visitors to the national park who voiced their opinions. We feel our concerns were addressed thoroughly. For the full report visit the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore website.
