It’s prescribed fire season at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Approximately 1,106 acres will be burned this season; these fires are critical for ecological restoration. Burns will happen east of Beverly Shores from Montana to Central Beach, west of Dune Acres in Cowles Bog up to the NIPSCO Bailly plant, at Mnoke Prairie in Porter, at Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, and in Gary near the Douglas Center.
The prescribed fire program at the park is conducted by trained and experienced fire personnel. Smoke dispersal is a primary concern and park staff will do everything possible to limit smoke in the area by monitoring wind and atmospheric conditions prior to ignitions. However, smoke drifting in and around park lands and roadways is possible.
