As you may know, the South Shore Line Railroad (NICTD) from South Bend to Chicago is one of the last commuter rail lines in the country without a bicycles-on-trains program. Save the Dunes and many partners including NICTD have been working for over two years to help them find resources to develop a plan, and that effort is now well underway. A survey designed to gauge community interest in allowing bikes on the the South Shore trains is now available on the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission’s website. I hope you can complete it and also share it with your networks. Here is a link to the survey: http://www.nirpc.org/hot-topics/bikes-on-trains-study.aspx.
The survey will close on February 20.
The survey is one step in the overall process of developing a bikes on trains program with NICTD. The process is sponsored by a partnership of public, private, and not-for-profit entities and is funded by the Federal Transit Administration with local match provided by ArcelorMittal, NICTD, National Parks Conservation Association, Regional Development Authority, Greenways Foundation, LaPorte and Porter County Governments, and NIPSCO.
Save the Dunes sits on the Advisory Committee for this project. Further details can be found on our website here .
