Save the Dunes and our partners: Shirley Heinze Land Trust, Indiana Dunes National Park, and Northwest Indiana Paddling Association, are proud to announce that we have been awarded a $205,959 grant from the Chi-Cal Rivers Fund to improve safe public access to the East Branch of the Little Calumet River and to improve nearby riparian habitats. This exciting project will fund the addition of three kayak/canoe launches, two permeable pavement parking lots, and the improvement of over 189 acres of riparian habitat along the East Branch of the Little Calumet River.
This is the first project of many to be proposed by this collaboration.
The East Branch of the Little Calumet River is currently a focus area for restoration and improvement activities in our region. Save the Dunes is excited to lead and promote many of these projects.
Improved public access and restoration activities will take place on three different properties owned by Shirley Heinze Land Trust and on a portion of the National Park on the mainstem of the river.
Many thanks to Christopher B. Burke Engineering for the generous donation of their expert engineering and permitting services. Great projects like this are better able to take shape with the assistance of local businesses like Christopher B. Burke Engineering.
Stay tuned for more details on this exciting project as it takes shape!
