Careers in the Environmental Field at Green Drinks Gary

April’s Green Drinks Gary event features a panel of professionals in the environmental field who will provide insight on getting into and working within the field, including skills they have utilized, challenges they have faced, and their areas of interest. The panelists will discuss how they became interested in this type of work and provide tips and recommendations for those interested in pursuing a career in the environmental field. Indiana University Northwest will be present and have a table of  information on courses, career counseling, and other resources. Below is information on the three panelists for the event.
Kellen Marshall has a passion for educating the public on ecological issues. She is a PhD Candidate in the Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the creator and host of web series “Living Chicago,” slated to be launched 2015, and the director of research at Eden Place Nature Center. Kellen also sits on a variety of professional and community based environmental organizations.
Maggie Byrne is the Grant Specialist with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Lake Michigan Coastal Program.  Within the Lake Michigan watershed of northwest Indiana, she offers technical assistance to local, county, and state governments, as well as non-profit organizations, to aid them in designing sustainable projects, and submitting successful grant applications to fund their projects.  Maggie has had a varied background in the natural resources and environmental field, and is excited to share her views on crafting a challenging and fulfilling career.
Natalie Johnson is the Urban Waters Coordinator for the Northwest Indiana Urban Waters Partnership. Her office is located at Purdue University-Calumet where she coordinates federal, state and community partnership work while also engaging college students in regional water quality, quantity, and access efforts. Natalie has been working on water-related issues and environmental community outreach for the last ten years and is currently conducting research on septic system maintenance and care in Northwest Indiana. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (with a concentration in Biology) from the University of Missouri. She is currently finishing her Master of Science in Natural Resources and Environmental Science degree with the University of Illinois.

Green Drinks is a monthly meetup that hosts discussions and presentations on a range of environmental topics. Green Drinks locations exist throughout the world, and Indiana is home to several chapters of Green Drinks, including Michigan City and South Bend. A new Green Drinks chapter in Gary will be held the first Tuesday of every month at 18th Street Brewery.
