2024 Dorothy Buell Youth Environmental Award Winners

Rahul Durai

Rahul first learned about Save the Dunes in 2021, while in Indianapolis with our partners, Hoosier Environmental Council, for Greening The Statehouse event. He heard from a staff member of Save the Dunes, and was inspired by our legacy, history, and work in the sector of Environmental advocacy for NWI.

While in high school, Rahul was the co-founder of Confront the Climate Crisis, a statewide youth-led climate action organization. His recent article regarding wetlands regulation issues is an example of the great accomplishments from a generation who understand how they will be directly impacted by these pressing issues, and are beginning their advocacy journeys at a young age. The technical information provided in his article as well as the article’s focus on how wetlands are important to taxpayers and developers is well described and thoroughly researched, and captures the important issues that environmental organizations such as ours are communicating to our local state legislators.

We believe that this award  is an impactful sentiment to Rahul’s trajectory in the Environmental Sector, and his passion and work ethic is an echo of the local and federal grassroots efforts made by Dorothy Buell when she began Save The Dunes by getting colleges, neighbors and friends involved in the pressing matters of climate resilience and protecting the environment.
