2025 Paul H. Douglas Memorial Award Winner

Christopher J. Pergiel

Christopher J. Pergiel’s 45-year journey with the National Park Service is nothing short of extraordinary. From his early days with the Student Conservation Corps to his rise through the ranks as a seasonal employee, full-time Law Enforcement Ranger, and eventually Chief Ranger, Chris has consistently embodied the values of service, leadership, and stewardship. His impact didn’t stop there. As Deputy Superintendent—and later Acting Superintendent—at Indiana Dunes National Park, Chris played a pivotal role in shaping the park’s future. He helped secure over $22 million in funding through the Great American Outdoors Act, leading efforts to restore and preserve historic sites like the Bailly Homestead, the Good Fellow Camp Lodge, and the House of Tomorrow.

These projects not only protected cultural landmarks but also improved accessibility and enhanced the visitor experience for generations to come. Chris’s leadership was marked by clarity, collaboration, and a deep respect for both the land and the people who care for it. He navigated complex restoration efforts, built strong community partnerships, and brought a steady hand to every challenge. His ability to balance operational demands with long-term vision made a lasting difference at Indiana Dunes and across the NPS.

But perhaps most importantly, Chris has been a mentor, a colleague, and a friend. His guidance and generosity have shaped countless careers and strengthened the bonds within the NPS family. His legacy lives on in the places he helped protect and the people he inspired along the way.
