Public Access and Greenways of Northwest Indiana & the Indiana Dunes

A “greenway” is a linear, protected open space that links parks, nature preserves, and populated areas for conservation and recreation! Greenways can be established along natural corridors like river valleys or on repurposed routes such as old railroad tracks. They are used for activities like walking, cycling, and other recreational pursuits, and they also serve to protect natural features and provide benefits like flood damage prevention.

We are lucky that Northwest Indiana not only has a plethora of state, regional, and municpal bike paths, but we’re excited to announce a project focusing on promoting and engaging community members to access

Marquette Greenway

Residents of the South Shore region have long desired to have an uninterrupted trail connecting Chicago to New Buffalo, MI, providing access to a wide variety of destinations along the lakefront. The enormous work of planning this corridor has been a collaborative effort for two decades.

The Marquette Greenway will represent an unparalleled multi-use trail experience, traversing through a geographically and socio economically diverse landscape. It will connect a population of 192,600 residents within a mile and a half of the trail (including 60,000 who are employed within the corridor), to recreational facilities, scenic landscapes, and economic opportunities.

Local & Regional Access Maps

City’s and municipalities across northwest indiana have regional access maps to help you explore the region with confidence. Check out this collaborative map from Visit Miller Beach, that highlights bike paths, bus routes, bike rentals, and other natural landmarks to explore in Miller Beach!
