Notre Dame Students Present on Indiana Wetlands

This December, Save the Dunes worked with the Notre Dame Student Policy Network on their project to understand the current state of Wetland Protections in Indiana. The group came to our office at Barker House to present their impressive research to our staff and fellow wetlands advocacy partners across the state! Some of the important statistics they highlighted included:

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources estimates that one acre of wetland annually provides $248 in water purification, $2,270 in water storage, $1,055 in erosion prevention and nitrate removal equivalent to that found in runoff from 100 acres of cropland

For every .91 cents put into the wetland industry, the state of Indiana receives a dollar back

One acre of wetland can store between 1 and 1.5 million gallons of water

As an advocacy organization, we were heartened to see university students present on such a complicated issue with clarity, passion, and a deep understanding of the nuances involved, demonstrating their commitment to creating meaningful dialogue and driving positive change.

With your help, we will continue to protects and advocates for the Indiana dunes, Lake Michigan, and the surrounding natural areas for the health and vitality of the environment, and the people who live, work, and recreate in Northwest Indiana.
