Save the Dunes and ten partner organizations from Indiana and Illinois, together called the Calumet Land Conservation Partnership (CLCP), were honored to receive a Force of Nature Award from the Chicago Wilderness Alliance during their January 17 Celebration of Conservation event at the Morton Arboretum.

A force of nature brings novel approaches, big ideas, extraordinary collaborations, and bold leadership to their cause. Nominated by their peers, the Force of Nature Award winners share a passion for the environment and a determination to improve their communities. The Alliance bestows Force of Nature Awards every two years.

Save the Dunes and the CLCP group were nominated for their Conservation Action Planning in the Calumet Region project, which is a collaborative approach for protecting nature in the bi-state region. CLCP partners produced a series of coordinated Conservation Action Plans (CAPs) to identify conservation targets, threats, and strategies to meet emerging opportunities. Last year, CLCP released the “Conservation Action Planning in the Calumet Region” report that integrates the CAPs developed in previous years into a collective framework.

The plans provide a roadmap for how people in the 21st century can work together to face the challenges and meet the opportunities these special places face. Partners representing diverse perspectives are able to make tremendous progress when working in collaboration toward shared conservation goals.

CLCP partners include Save the Dunes, Shirley Heinze Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy, Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission, National Parks Conservation Association, Audubon Great Lakes, Openlands, Metropolitan Planning Council, The Wetlands Initiative, The Field Museum, and the Northwest Indiana Urban Waters Federal Partnership.
