Let's talk about two types of dunes: foredunes and blowouts

Foredunes are shore-parallel dune ridges that are just landward of the beach and covered in vegetation like marram grass that helps trap blowing sand. A blowout is a saucer-, cup- or trough-shaped depression or hollow formed by wind erosion on a preexisting sand deposit. Blowouts form as a result of some disturbance, when vegetation is absent or damaged so that it cannot anchor sands in place. Wind blows the loose sand, making a “living dune,” that can move several feet every year.
