Celebrating 70 Years
of Saving the Dunes
Our 70th Anniversary
In June of 1952, Dorothy Buell and a group of 21 local women met at Dorothy’s home in Ogden Dunes, and formed the Save the Dunes Council. Their goal was to protect the remaining untouched sand dunes on the southern shores of Lake Michigan from threats of further development. 70 years later, we proudly continue the work of our founders to protect and advocate for the Indiana Dunes!
We have already enjoyed some special events this year, and even have some limited edition shirts and hats to mark this momentous occasion. Keep reading to learn more!

70th Anniversary Special Events
70th Anniversary Hike & Celebration
To celebrate 70 years of Save the Dunes, we held a gathering at Chellberg Farm in the Indiana Dunes National Park on our official anniversary date. We offered a shuttle to Cowles Bog for a one-mile ranger-led hike, as well as a ranger-led hike at Chellberg Farm.
We are so grateful to the Indiana Dunes National Park for their incredible partnership and support on this event, to the volunteers who helped the event run smoothly, to Kona Ice of the Dunes and Cool runnings Food Truck for supplying the tasty treats, and to Save the Tunes for setting the perfect vibe! It was a wonderful evening full of good company and celebration!

70th Anniversary Benefit
In August, we hosted our 70th Anniversary Benefit at Chesterton Art Center. Renowned regional artist, Corey Hagelberg, created a striking art print in honor of the event. We enjoyed delicious food from Third Coast Spice Cafe and Lemon Tree, and delightful libations from The Chesterton Brewery and Running Vines Winery.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for an afternoon of enjoying art and connecting with so many of our supporters and friends!
Corey Hagelberg’s limited edition Save the Dunes print is still available for purchase! Please reach out to office@savedunes.org if you’re interested in owning this beautiful, special piece of our history. The cost of each print is $100.
