We began this project in September 2023, with the goal of keeping 1000lbs of plastic out of landfills and green spaces. In return for the efforts, in collaboration with NexTrex, Save the Dunes will recieve a recycled plastic bench, in tribute to past Save the Dunes President, Jeanette Neagu.

As the project progressed, we had an overwhelming amount of support from our community members. Thanks to you donating your plastic films and bags, we are pacing way ahead of schedule and are hoping to wrap up the project by end of July 2024, 2 months ahead of schedule! 

With collection locations across Lake, Porter, and LaPorte County, plus some extra help from the Highland Sustainability Commission (who completed their rendition of this project in just 6 months!!). 

Big thank you to those locations that hosted our receptacles – Shirley Heinze Land Trust Meadowbrook office, Ellen Firme Gallery & Art Supply, and Indie Indie Bang Bang in Miller Beach!

So now what? Well, once we’ve completed the collection of 1000lbs, we will choose our bench color, and schedule a drop off date. We are planning on having the bench be an integral part of the soon to be Pollinator Garden on the Barker House Grounds, outside of Save the Dunes HQ here in Michigan City.
