Project Wrap-Up

Save the Dunes was generously awarded funding from the Heath Foundation of La Porte in 2025 for a program series titled “Bloom Where You’re Planted: Creating Nature Connections,” in which Save the Dunes engaged La Porte County residents without access to garden space at home in meaningful & mindful programming to promote the health benefits correlated with nature. Programming focused on inviting community members to visit green spaces, nature-inspired art initiatives, and hands-on workshops to create connections with the natural world, wherever they may be!

This funding supported 3 in-person events and the creation of 2 informational videos, bringing the projects within two of the events to those at home.

Pressed Flower Mindfulness Journal Workshop with Lubeznik Center for the Arts

In December 2025, we hosted our first event in this program series, in partnership with the Lubeznik Center for the Arts. We hosted 20 participants for an afternoon at the Barker House, as we created our very own pressed flower mindfulness journals! Each participant went home with a journal and a flower press to continue the project at home for the growing season ahead. We had so much fun chatting and connecting about the importance of nature and placemaking at the historic Barker House!

Container Gardening with Natives Workshop with the La Porte County Master Gardeners

Once the summer season arrived we continued this project with a collaborative event with the La Porte County Master Gardeners, hosting 10 people in the yard at the Barker House for our Container Gardening with Natives workshop. Each participant got hands-on learning from a master gardener on best planting practices, care tips, and more to bring a small container planter full of natives home.

Michigan City Garden Trail

To wrap up this event series, we invited folks to join us on a Michigan City Garden Trail!

This event focused on gardens and green spaces across Michigan City, focusing on the Friendship Botanical Gardens, Wabash St. Rain gardens, the Save the Dunes Pollinator Garden, and one privately owned garden. The goal of the event was to highlight accessibility and visibility of gardens in the neighborhood and inspire folks to start their own native pollinator habitat at home!
