Understanding PFAS or “Forever Chemicals”

What is PFAS? 

PFAS is an acronym for a class of more than 12,000 chemicals which are used to make products water, stain, and grease resistant. They are found in products such as food packaging, water resistant clothing, carpet and upholstery, nonstick pans, firefighting foam, and thousands of other products. PFAS can move out of products and contaminate our food, water, and bodies.

Our partners at Hoosier Environmental Council and Purdue’s Institute for a Sustainable Future recently conducted a webinar to highlight the current information on the sources, uses, and impacts of PFAS on human health and the environment with particular emphasis on concerns for Hoosiers.

Impacts in Indiana

For Indiana residents, our state regulations are required to have a standard that is “no less stringent than” the federal rules, meaning Indiana can not enact regulations that are stronger or more restrictive than those set by federal entities like the EPA. This can sometimes be problematic, but in this case, it is a positive thing, as it means our state will begin setting limits and will help water systems take necessary steps to come into compliance with the federal regulations in the next few years, particularly in the state session.

Jammin with Save the Dunes Cancelled

After careful consideration, Save the Dunes has made the difficult decision to cancel Jammin with Save the Dunes tomorrow due to the thunderstorms in the forecast. While we know this is disappointing, we hope you can understand that the health and safety of our guests, our staff, and our performers is our first priority. Your Pass allows you to access any and all Indiana Dunes National Park beaches, trailheads, and parking lots while enjoying the beauty of the Indiana Dunes and beyond. 10% of funds from passes purchased through Save the Dunes will go directly to supporting our mission.
