Success! Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Passes the Senate

Success! The Senate passed the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Act of 2026, legislation to reauthorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) through 2030 to help fund critical conservation projects across the great lakes region.

The bill now moves to the U.S. House of Representatives for consideration. Once approved by both chambers, it will be sent to the President to be signed into law.

If this passes, this federal legislation would reauthorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), allowing the federal government to continue to accelerate its investment to restore and protect the Great Lakes – the source of drinking water for more that 42 million people – and to tackle serious threats including toxic pollution, runoff, habitat loss, and invasive species.

GLRI is a critical funding source for the Indiana Dunes National Park to treat invasive species and restore wetlands within the National Park boundaries. GLRI also supports other regional organizations, including Save the Dunes! We currently have several GLRI projects that promote pollinator habitat and invasive species management across our region.  Without the reauthorization of GLRI, important projects like ours and so many more will no longer be possible.

The GLRI Act of 2026 would provide a critical increase in investment up to $475 million annually. The bill was introduced in February 2025 in the Senate by our very own Indiana Senator Todd Young, who signed on as a cosponsor! Thank you Senator Young! We are heartened to see such broad bipartisan support from the delegation on this important act.

Why the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is important:

GLRI funding is essential to protecting and restoring Indiana Dunes National Park. It supports critical projects beyond regular park funding, helping preserve habitats, improve water quality, and protect the park’s natural beauty for visitors to enjoy!

Thank you for supporting this important bill!

Sincerely,

Harshini Ratnayaka

Manager of Government Affairs and Policy
